Snow Jazz Gastein

Jazz aficionados won't want to miss a visit to Sägewerk (Sawmill) Jazz Club in Bad Hofgastein. The club offers a crowded programme and is also the co-founder of the annual jazz festival "Snow Jazz Gastein", spanning several days in the second week of March. International stars and newcomers rub shoulders on stages in the town's hotels, ski huts, evening concerts in the Casino and Sägewerk Jazz Club and in Dorfgastein's festival hall, transforming Gastein into Europe's jazz centre for the week.

St Nicholas' Church

St Nicholas' Church in Bad Gastein dates from the 14th century and is the oldest building in its original condition in the Gastein Valley. The Late Gothic frescoes in the interior and medieval architecture of the pilgrimage church are unique in the Salzburger Land province.

Excursion to Salzburg

Salzburg, the capital city of the province of Salzburg, is a little over one hour's drive from Bad Gastein, or one and a half hours away by train and almost two hours by bus. In the city of Mozart's birth, visitors can seek out the great composer's birthplace and residence in addition to Salzburg Cathedral, the great fortress towering over the city, the Imperial Residence, Hellbrunn Palace with its fountains and, of course, Mozartkugeln - the popular sweet treats.

Solar Baths

In summer and winter, visitors to Dorfgastein can relax in the Solar Baths in water temperatures from 26 to 28° C. Close to the valley station of the mountain cable cars and overlooking Gastein Valley, the family-oriented baths offers an extensive range of facilities, from a water slide and sports and children's pools to a wellness and spa area with sauna and solarium. The popular log hut sauna, built of aged Finnish pine, overlooks Dorfgastein's skiing slopes and valley station.

Paragliding

Tandem paragliding flights enable daring souls with a head for heights to take a bird's eye view of the world. In summer and winter alike, passengers over the age of five can enjoy an unforgettable paragliding flight with an experienced paraglider. The starting-point is the mountain station on Stubnerkogel at an altitude of 2230 metres; the flight finishes in Bad Gastein, a breathtaking 1300 metres below.

Curling

Red Bull Playstreets

To experience the world's most daring freeskiers, look no further than Bad Gastein! A unique sports event takes place annually at the heart of this stylish town, attracting newschool skiers and freestylers to the resort. The pro skiers of the Slopestyle championship demonstrate breathtaking leaps and spectacular stunts to spectators and judges on a 500-metre course in the town centre, over rooftops and spanning streets.

Cross-Country Skiing

Bad Gastein is a paradise for cross-country skiers. 45 kilometres of groomed cross-country tracks of all grades extend through beautiful winter landscapes and the stunning natural setting of the Gastein Valley. Snow is almost guaranteed for tracks at altitudes of 1000 to 1600 metres. And if a day of cross-country skiing is simply not enough, visit Bad Gastein-Böckstein or the Kurpark in Bad Hofgastein for floodlit evening skiing.

On Graukogel, Bad Gastein's own skiing mountain, enthusiasts can tackle the challenging route taken by the 1958 Alpine Skiing Championships or explore countless off-piste untouched routes as 'freeriders'. Whether visitors are greenhorns or speed freaks, our facilities span family-friendly slopes and racing routes, and newschool skiers will make the most of the perfectly groomed Freestyle Snowpark on Stubnerkogel.

Snowboarding

Bad Gastein is truly a Mecca for snowboarders and freeriders in the Salzburger Land region. Snow is guaranteed, with high Alpine skiing areas at altitudes of almost 2700 metres and artificial snow systems over wide areas. Visitors can choose from four different skiing areas designed to fulfil the wishes of the most ambitious snowboarders - but beginners are as welcome as advanced-level and freestyle boarders. A fun park was built on Stubnerkogel in 2008. Freeriders appreciate the many untouched and ungroomed off-piste routes that are especially numerous in the high Alpine regions, offering powder slopes up to 1400 metres of altitude.

Tobogganing

Bad Gastein and environs have three natural toboggan runs with descents between two and three kilometres. Bad Gastein and Dorfgastein have floodlit runs for thrilling after-dark tobogganing.

Casino

The Grand Hotel de l´Europe, once the largest and most modern hotel of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy hosting celebrated representatives of political, cultural and scientific life and today heritage-listed, is now home to a casino operated by Casinos Austria. In addition to roulette, blackjack, poker and gaming machines, the Casino holds events including jazz concerts and game tournaments.

Gastein Healing Caves

Gold-miners hunting for the coveted precious metal in these caves were the first to discover one of the most effective natural treatments for rheumatic disorders. The natural radon content in the cave air, the temperature between 37 and 41.4° C and the high humidity of 70 to 100 per cent have a therapeutic and soothing effect on the respiratory system, musculo-skeletal system, skin and immune system.

Bad Gastein has more to offer than sporting activities; the spa resort also provides an array of opportunities for rest and relaxation enabling all guests to unwind completely. Skating

Two skating rinks offer skating fans the chance to pirouette the whole winter through against a stunning natural backdrop. The natural ice rink at Bad Gastein is temperature-dependent, but Bad Hofgastein, around seven kilometres away, has an artificial ice rink and three speed skating lanes. Skates can be hired at both rinks.

Winter Hiking

Situated at an altitude of 1000 metres, the resort of Bad Gastein and its surroundings, Hohe Tauern National Park, are usually blanketed in magical snow. Over 100 kilometres of cleared hiking and walking trails wind through this winter landscape set with deep forests and lofty peaks.
